11º Grade “The Victorian Era Projects”
Signs of the times
The Victorian Era in British history was the period of queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 until her death in 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined culture, great advances in technology and national self-confidence for Britain. During the Victorian age, Britain was the world’s most powerful nation. By the end of the Victoria’s reign, the British empire extended over about one- fifth of the earth’s surface, were Victorian England saw great expansion of wealth, power and culture but also it was a time of misery and urban ugliness.
To know more about this era, eleventh graders were asked to create a time capsule for this era, a vessel whose contents give a well-rounded impression of the period. They should make or find objects, such a patent medicine bottles, collect copies and drawings of documents and pictures which sum up the times in a concise way. Their presentations demonstrated their level of research, their physical work of assembling the capsule, and their english skills to present the project to the class.
